The Cartographic Research Laboratory was established in 1982. It is a self-supporting, nonprofit facility, receiving funding through the sale of publications and through the completion of cartographic and geographic information science (GIS) projects for a broad clientele. Adjoining the Map Library, the lab is ideally situated to handle a multitude of mapping and spatial analysis tasks. The lab staff consists of graduate and undergraduate students pursuing degrees in geography. The lab supervisor, Craig Remington, oversees all projects to completion.

The Map Library works closely with the Cartographic Research Lab. Their webpage alabamamaps.ua.edu contains an extensive collection of digital versions of old maps, many of which are found in the Map Library!
